ねらう【狙う】

1 〔命中させようと照準を合わせる･標的と定める〕 aim [take aim] 《at…》; sight 《a rifle》; sight in on 《a target》; draw [get, take] a bead 《on…》.

●よくねらう take good [careful, close] aim 《(with one's rifle) at a target》; draw a fine bead 《on…》

・正確にねらう take accurate [sure] aim 《at…》

・拳銃でねらう point [level] a gun 《at sb》; cover sb with a pistol

・足[タイヤ]をねらって撃つ shoot at sb's leg [a tire]

・キジをねらって一発撃つ take a shot [shoot] at a pheasant.

●機会をねらう watch for a chance; be on the lookout for an opportunity

・彼女にプロポーズしても無駄だよ. 彼女は社長の息子をねらっているんだから. There's no point in proposing to her. You see she's angling for the [a] company president's son.

・あいつはねらった獲物は逃がさない男だ. Once he sets his mind on getting something, he never lets up.

・テロリストたちが彼の命をねらっていた. The terrorists were out to kill him.

・俺はやつらにねらわれている. They're after me.

・あいつは私の財産をねらっているんだ. He has his eye on my property.

・年末は金融機関をねらった犯罪が増える. Toward the end of the year the number of crimes against financial institutions rises.

・コンビニは夜も開いているので強盗にねらわれやすい. Convenience stores are easy targets for robbers because they're open at night.

・強盗はその店の給料日をねらって犯行に及んだらしい. The robber purposely committed the crime on the store's payday.

3 〔目当てとする〕 aim 《at…》; strive 《for…》; be aimed 《at…》.

●経済的効果をねらってワールドカップを招致する invite the FIFA World Cup championships counting on [with an eye to] the economic effect

・優勝をねらう strive for victory in the championships

・褒賞金をねらう be after [have an eye to] the reward

・大衆の受けをねらった無責任な公約 an irresponsible public promise aimed at popular acclaim.

●貴重品などには手をつけておらず, 犯人は彼女の殺害のみをねらって侵入したらしい. The perpetrator didn't touch her valuables and appears to have broken in with the sole intention of murdering her.

・彼女は店のイメージアップをねらって全面的に改装した. She completely refurbished the shop with the aim of improving its image.

・その爆撃は軍事的というより心理的効果をねらったものである. The bombing raid was aimed at creating a psychological rather than a military effect.
